THE PROFESSIONAL ASSISTANTS ACADEMY – Available regionally or in-house, this Academy was developed based on input from executive secretaries, administrative assistants, clerical assistants, and chief executives in several organizations. The curriculum includes presentations and group activities on the following topics: the changing role of the professional assistant; understanding interpersonal style differences; creating a positive image; service orientation; organizational savvy; writing, proofing and editing lab; career management; communication skills; and conflict resolution skills. A motivational speaker on a topic of interest to the group is also part of The Professional Assistants Academy curriculum.

DIVERSITY EDUCATIONAL SESSIONS

Several distinct workshops are offered that explore core diversity issues: how to communicate and manage conflict across individual and group differences; how to manage personal patterns of behavior that exclude others; how to create inclusive patterns of behavior which contribute to a non-threatening, non-retaliatory work environment; how to recognize the value added to the workplace of individuals and groups who are different from each other.

Through the use of lecturettes, small and large group discussions, and experiential activities, the topics of prejudice and stereotyping are explored. Gender issues such as attraction, communication differences, harassment and sexism are directly addressed and discussed. Skill building in straight talk, dialogue and dealing with conflicts that arise out of a complex, diverse workplace is included. Exploring the issue of generational differences is a capstone discussion in these sessions.

THE COMPETENCY INSTRUMENT

The 84-item questionnaire assesses a manager's current level of performance in the 17 competencies which have been judged critical to excellent performance at higher levels of leadership and management. The instrument is filled out by the manager, his/her boss, peers, and direct reports. The manager's self-ratings are compared, in a graphic form, to the combined rating of all others to create a picture of how this manager sees himself/herself compared to how others see him or her. This instrument was originally created by THE CENTRE in 1985, pilot tested for validity and statistically tested for reliability. The instrument was revised in 2001. The process is highly confidential.
